Somerled’s story begins in 1969 with Rob Moody. Once a Maths and Science teacher, he soon realised his patience and curiosity were better suited to the cellar than the classroom.
In 1971, under the mentorship of Max Schubert, the legendary creator of Penfolds Grange, Rob oversaw the red ferments for that year’s Grange vintage, now considered one of the finest of its decade. It marked the beginning of a career defined by craft, and a deep connection to some of Australia’s most iconic wines.
As Chief Winemaker at Wynns, Rob helped shape the winery’s direction and introduced the John Riddoch label, a release that quickly became one of the country’s most admired Cabernets. His hand can be found in many of Australia’s greats: Bin 707, St Henri, Rouge Homme, Tulloch, Hungerford Hill, Leo Buring, and, of course, Grange itself.
By 2001, Rob was ready to create something of his own. What began as a small batch of Shiraz soon became Somerled, a family project named after his grandfather’s racehorse.
“We started with Shiraz, then added Chardonnay and sparkling, each one shaped by the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills and Rob’s patient, elegant style.”
In 2010, we opened the Somerled cellar door in Hahndorf, a place to share not just our wines, but the story behind them. A space for those who value rarity, craft, and conversation; poured with purpose, and never rushed.
Somerled is, and always has been, a family-owned and family-run venture. Every bottle is crafted in limited numbers and offered only through our cellar bar and wine club.
You won’t find Somerled on the shelves of any retailers. We believe in preserving the integrity of our wines and sharing them only with those who value something rare.
Our cellar bar and tastings are an invitation into our world. Intimate, welcoming, and refined, they are places to slow down, discover, and connect with the people behind the wine.
Whether celebrating among the vines, or opening a delivery at home, Somerled is about more than what’s in the glass, it’s about creating moments that linger long after the last sip.
With Somerled, you’re not simply selecting a wine, but discovering something rare, exclusive, and made to be treasured.
We preserve the rarity of what we create. And that is the promise we pour into every glass.
